GET A ROOM! Got a Room? The Rugby World Cup Is Closer Than You Think!
If you are one of the lucky wealthy enough to travel between the event stadiums be forewarned that the pencil plane flights between Nth and Sth Island can be hairy! But make your peace and enjoy the champion rollercoaster ride into windy Wellington! If you haven´t already, or if you know anyone looking Get a Room for the Sth Africa vs Wales RWC 2011 weekend, please forward this post if you know of someone, we cannot go (were in Buenos Aires) and need to sell it! Don´t know what´s up with blogger so I´m posting via comments for the moment??!!
ReplyDeleteAttention rubgy fans! GET A ROOM! Have you got a room? The Rugby World Cup Is Closer Than You Think! Are you an aficionado of ìthe ruffian´s game played by gentlemen? Are you thinking about heading to NZ for the 2010 Rugby World Cup? Surely you want to be on hand to see who will be next to raise the trophy. Englands had their shot, France, Australia, and New Zealand were right in there for the 2003 Cup; they will surely be back in force. And who knows? There is always the possibility that the world champions USA could win it!!! (You realise they are reigning Olympic World Champions since they dropped it from the event right?) No way you want to miss any of that action!
If the thought has turned into a definite plan to attend some if not all of the mega-event, you better get your tickets. But don´t stop there! Now is also the time to nail down your living arrangements. Wait too long, and the search for good accommodations will make you feel like you´re in the middle of a scrum yourself, it is cold in Wellington and that Antarctic Southerly is one reason you won´t see too many homeless on the streets there, you don´t want to be in a rowdy hostel!
If you are anywhere near serious about getting as immersed in the games as you can, the last thing you want to do is deal with arranging multiple accommodations and then bounce around from venue to venue with luggage in hand. Your best bet for maximum rugby enjoyment is to rent a short term apartment for the duration of your visit and use it as your base camp. And your best bet for base camp is Wellington.
With the transport service via rail and bus isn´t that regular for a capital city but the flights are well connected and regular. If you are basing yourself in Wellington you can jump on the ferry a take road trip to the South Island Christchurch is about a 10 hour drive and about six from Welington to the North Island ski fields, so you might as well leave the Auckland Rotorua Corromandel tourist stuff until after the event.
With all the advantages of a world cup in a small country it is quite different to say the French World Cup as the matches are spread throughout the country, (oh, and there are plenty of other interesting things there besides rugby stadiums), there is one disadvantage: vacation apartments will be at a premium, if they aren´t already. Places with good amenities in interesting neighborhoods and enough space for your whole party are getting snapped up as you read this, Wellington in particular suffers through any international event and this won´t be any different, i know because we booked in January and the rooms were already more than $300 per night.
If you are any kind of rugby fan, you have a responsibility to be in the best shape possible to go nuts rooting for the team(s) of choice. This means that you need to pay as much attention to your between-game experience as you do to your in-stadium one. Your best strategy? Follow up your ticket purchase by nailing down a place you can hang out between games. Right now.
